Healthy Eating on a Student Budget
It's extra specially worthwhile eating well when you're at University because it will give you increased brain power and energy. It will help you fight off Freshers' Flu, look good, and battle the hangover.
We reckon eating well is all about:
One that is nutritious, balanced, full of vitamins and minerals, feeds your body and looks after your vital organs
Remember breakfast to keep you going until lunch and boost your metabolism
Almost a third of the food the UK buys gets chuckled away. Is there really enough food on the planet & money in our pockets to waste on throwing food in the bin?
Shop at the end of the day, this is when produce items i.e. fresh veg and bread, are often reduced. Shop when you're not hungry, you won't buy as much impulse food this way, which will save you money and waste. Buying in bulk is cheaper with foods that 'keep' so look out for deals.
Unless you love cooking spending lots of time preparing meals isn't going to be the top priority in a very busy schedule. That's why take aways and ready meals are student favourites. But eating well shouldn't have to take up hours of your time, which you could be spending doing something more useful and you can cook in bulk and put the rest in the fridge/freezer to warm up another day.
Knowing where your food comes from means that you know exactly what you are putting into your body. You can eat with a clean conscience knowing that what you eat has been carefully looked after, and won't cause too much damage to the planet. You can support your local economy too, and this is even easier for the Bournemouth University student living in the rural county of Dorset.
and we think it's totally possible to do this as a student.
This guide to all things good has been put together by the Students' Union and our friends. It has been updated this Summer to give you even more recipe ideas, and creative ways of eating well.
