► Property Security

It has been recently reported that the average student’s possessions are worth over £4,500, however most students do not have adequate insurance or take any security precautions to ensure minimum risk of theft or loss. It if often believed that it won’t happen to them or that their possessions are covered under their parents insurance, which it isn’t.

Immobilise is a FREE and SECURE database, where you can register the details of your property and valuables. If something of yours is lost stolen, you can use immobilise to tell law enforcement, your insurer and the second-hand trade to assist in recovering your property and catch the thief. Tip: Use your private email address rather than your student address, so you can still access the website after you leave uni.

If you have a bike, make sure it is secured with a quality lock both when you are out and about and when it is stored at your home. Consider fitting an electronic tag which costs about £14.  These are available from Immobilise too, here.

SUBU was notified by Dorset Police on 10th November that there has been 13 stolen bikes on BU and AUCB campuses in the last month and a half.  In response Dorset Police are coming to Talbot Campus on November 24th to tag bikes.  If you want your bike tagged please bring it to the Bike Compound behind Kimmeridge House between 2pm - 3:30pm.

If you live in rented accomodation, take out contents insurance just in case you fall victim to crime. Just type “insurance for students” or “contents insurance” into a search engine, and look for a insurance company you have heard of.

Don't forget about Identity Theft. Buy a shredder and make sure your personal and bank details aren’t accessible to those who shouldn’t see them. Be aware to not put your personal details on networking sites.

A useful resource for keeping a list of items you own can be found at www.immobilise.com. Here you can register your items and gain proof of ownership in case you are a victim of fire or theft.
