Sustainable Travel at Bournemouth University

Buses
The start of term sees the Unilinx buses return to full service. Unilinx is a student-oriented service provided by Wilts & Dorset. It provides transport between the two campuses and extends to areas of Poole, Bournemouth and Boscombe that are populated by students. Full timetables are available in reception areas and is downloadable from here. For more information please visit: www.unilinx.net.

Students can also show their ID card to get reduced travel on selected Wilts & Dorset bus routes. Details of other local buses can be found at www.wdbus.co.uk or www.yellowbuses.co.uk.

Car Sharing
Here at the University we discourage students from using cars and parking is limited and obviously it isn't great for the environment. However, if you need to drive we have our own Bournemouth University Car Share Group.
For more information or to sign up, just visit: www.liftshare.org/subsiteentry/bournemouthuni.asp
Once you’ve registered, you can link with others within the University Group or those registered with other Dorset groups to explore car-sharing possibilities. The site is full of useful information and is free to use; you simply share travel costs with your lift sharers, saving you money! Car-sharing helps reduce traffic congestion, pollution and pressure on parking.

Cycling (You can download a cycle map by clicking here)
At each campus there is a secure “compound” where you can lock your bike. Entry is by use of a special card – available from the Students’ Union Reception on the Talbot Campus or the Students’ Union shop at the Lansdowne for a refundable deposit of £5 (this card will also provide access to the shower and locker facilities in Christchurch House). You can also secure your bike to a ‘Sheffield stand’ or bike rack at the Talbot Campus, or behind Studland House at the Lansdowne.

There are male and female showers and lockers in a purpose built facility on the ground floor of Christchurch House (accessible via the rear of the building) on the Talbot Campus, on the ground floor of Bournemouth House and the 7th floor of Studland House on the Lansdowne.

Bournemouth University Bike User Group

The BU Bike User Group (BUBUG) looks forward to welcoming you to Bournemouth University. We hope that you will be bringing your bike with you to University and not a car! There are great opportunities for you to get around by bike in Bournemouth & Poole and to explore the beautiful surrounding coast and countryside.

BUBUG has organised a number of events and initiatives to help you make the most of your bike while you are here:

Cycle Safely Cycle Securely

Bournemouth University Bike User Group (BUBUG) has launched a campaign, supported by Dorset Police, to highlight the importance of bike security both on campus and in the wider area.

The University is constantly increasing security for bike users and providing a range of facilities for your bike, including caged compounds, Sheffield stands and enhanced CCTV. However, common with other local organisations, we can still be a target for bike thieves who ‘tailgate’ into secure areas behind genuine cyclists.

Individuals must take responsibility for ensuring bikes are locked up securely in these areas, yet some staff and students are falling foul of bike thieves by using inadequate locks that can be cut through in seconds.

Not only should you lock-up your bike in one of the areas provided, but also use a good quality, heavy duty bike lock. Cheap cable locks only take seconds for a thief to cut!

In a bid to tackle this issue, BUBUG can now offer a limited number of heavily subsidised Squire Urban Protector D-lock (worth £35) in the Student Union shops on both campuses for just £9.99. . These locks cannot be broken in 3 minutes, even using a range of tools. Subsidised lights will also be available. The locks will also be available to buy at BUBUG events throughout the academic year while stocks last.

Please also ensure that you are equipped with appropriate safety gear such as a helmet, lights and reflective jacket.
