3 Tips to Reduce your Waste!

  • Think before you shop- When shopping, think if you could buy the same product without the packaging, or buy something second hand.
  • Avoid food waste- Plan meals in advanced and only buy what you know you will use. (A great way of saving money too!)
  • Redecorating?-Contact your local Furniture Re-use Network. Or advertise your old furniture in your local paper or on websites such as Freecycle.

SUBU tries to reduce the amount of waste which is produced on campus, reuse as much material and equipment as possible AND all waste created in SUBU buildings is recycled- SUBU is a zero landfill organisation.

Platic Challenge
Up to 20 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans each year.

Plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, but never goes away.

We use single use plastics for just about everything, from brushing our teeth and showering to buying and storing our food and other products. It's durable and lightweight, but it's these properties that allow it to persist in the environment for hundreds to thousands of years.

The Marine Stewardship Council have launched a challenge to see how long you can last without using any single use plastics! Plastic Challengers will try and reduce the amount of plastic entering the environment. They will try and give up their lifestyle of convenience, giving up their pre-packed sandwiches, their ready meals and their drinks on the go during the challenge. People taking on the Plastic Challenge are often shocked to find out just how much single use plastic is used every day.

Fancy a challenge?- See how much single use plastic you can cut out!

Top tip!- Buy sandwiches in paper bags in the SUBU building istead of buying sandwiches packaged in plastic!

How Many Earths do you need?

Did you know… if everyone in the world lived the same lifestyle as we do in the UK then it is estimated we would need 3.5 earths to be sustainable- the world average is currently 1.5 earths. This means it takes us one year and a half to produce what we use in a year.

Find out how many earths would be used if everyone lived your lifestyle!- http://wwf-footprint-staging.torchboxapps.com/questionnaires/show/1/1/1

3 Ways you can reduce your impact are…

-Reducing the amount of meat (especially beef) you eat

-Eat locally produced food

-Try to Recycle/ Compost waste as much as possible

SUBU tries to be as sustainable as possible- there are compost bins arounf the SUBU building, we encourage the use of reusable water bottles rather than buying platic bottles of water and we support the university's Travel Plan which encourages the use of public transport over car useage- more information can be found here- https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/sustainability-bu/our-environmentally-friendly-travel-policies
