Frequently asked questions
How much time does being a Rep take up?
This depends completely on you. Needless to say, if you factor in two meetings a term and the time taken to obtain good quality feedback and fill in the form then it will take up around 5-6 hours a term. However, the benefits are worthwhile. Not only do you receive a free hoodie but being a Student Rep looks fantastic on your CV, allows the opportunity to become a School Rep and from next year, will earn you points towards the new BU Award.
How does a Framework Meeting work?
The Feedback Form should ideally be completed and sent around a week before the Framework Meeting. When you attend the meeting therefore, staff have had time to review what students have said and it gives them time to think of possible solutions or responses.
When you attend the meeting (you should be informed of when this is by your Programme Administrator), you will be given an agenda of which one item will read ‘Student Representatives Report’.
As a Student Rep, you may get involved in the whole meeting and not just the report part as your feedback on the topics is hugely valuable.
When it comes to the report, you can briefly talk through the main points and suggest possible solutions that you may have before allowing staff to give opinions.
The meetings can be very informal so it is important to stay relaxed.
What is a Student Rep Forum?
Student Rep Forums are a new feature this year and are only available to the schools who have, over the Summer, expressed an interest in piloting them.
In the past Student Reps have said that they bring items to the meeting and are told that nothing can be done about them. Usually this is because the people who can do something are not present at the Framework meetings as the issue relates to the wider student experience. The Forums are designed so that students can feedback on the wider student experience. This can range from the Library, Sports facilities, accommodation, buses, Students’ Union etc.
These will occur at least once a term and Student Reps should attend these.
Do I need to attend all these meetings?
Yes….the Framework Team Meetings and the Student Rep Forums focus on two different things: The Academic Programme and the wider student experience.
Both of these are hugely important and by you attending, all of the students you represent are potentially affected. If you do not attend, and a decision is made that you do not feel is correct, then your students will question the decision via you.
How do I access the Feedback Form?
In order to access the feedback form you need to be registered on this website; this prevents just anyone filling out a form.
You register by clicking on the button at the top right hand corner of this page and filling in the subsequent form.
Once registered, you need to log in and then will be able to access the form.
What do I do if I have a problem or do not know when a meeting is?
Do not worry, there is a large support network in place for you as a Rep. If you are unsure on something or are not aware when a meeting is then the best thing to do is ask either the Students’ Union (Through the VP Rep suvprep@bournemouth.ac.uk) or a staff member from your course (Framework Leader or Programme Administrator). The Programme Administrator should send an invite to the meeting well in advance but if you are not sure then it is best just to ask them.
How will I know when the training takes place?
Training dates for Reps are finalised in the summer and disseminated to the schools. However, in the lecture where Reps are elected, you should be presented with a two or three page PowerPoint presentation which details the date of the training session that needs to be attended.
If you are really unable to attend this session (Which will be held on a Saturday), then you need to email the Vice-President Representation (suvprep@bournemouth.ac.uk) to arrange a time to get trained.
I have already been trained before last year, do I have to attend this training?
Yes, a lot of things have changed since we last trained you. For instance, being a Rep no longer allows you to get £10 vouchers for Dylan’s or the Shop but by attending the training you will get a free hooded jumper. This is among a whole range of improvements that have been made in response to what last year’s Reps have said.
I am at a PartnershipCollege, is everything the same?
In the main, yes. However all the partnerships operate slightly differently so it is impossible to have it exactly the same. In short, you are still elected, trained, have to attend meetings and fill out the Rep Feedback Form so most is similar.
