SUBU is your Students’ Union, you are automatically a member when you enrol as a student at BU. We are a registered charity and all the profits from any commercial activities go back into funding other student activities and projects, clubs & societies and the very useful Advice Service, all of which make your time at BU even better. What’s more all our part-time staff are students and we endeavour to be ethical and environmental in what we do, so you can feel good about spending in your SUBU outlets.
The main BU venue on Lansdowne Campus is run by SUBU. From Club Nights, Live Gigs and Comedy, The Old Fire Station has it all including The Engine Room Café open weekdays between 11am and 6pm and its also available to hire for free for most nights of the week, plus there’s pre-drinks parties. Profits made at The Old Fire Station are returned to SUBU and other than 4 full time staff, The Old Fire Station only employs students on its bars, technical and promo teams.
Signing-up for the free Bronze wristband shows us that you are a Fresher and guarantees you entry to all OFFICIAL week one events before 11pm (8pm for Comedy Central). There will be a charge on the door although it will be cheaper with a Bronze wristband than without any wristband.
By buying a Silver wristband, you gain entry (No charge on the door / guaranteed until 11pm for club nights / 8pm for Comedy) to the OFFICIAL week one events at The Old Fire Station.
Purchasing the Gold wristband is your pass to all the events during week one, plus entry to all SUBU Old Fire Station events until Halloween. You will also gain entry to The Student Garden Party – Your Fresher’s Festival on Sat 24th Sept.
Any other tickets/wristbands available to purchase are not for the official Week One events. Consequentially we are warning against buying from outlets other than your Students' Union.
Once you have placed your online order then collection is when you arrive from The Engine Room.
The Engine Room (@ The Old Fire Station) will be open from 10am – 6pm on Saturday 16th September and Sunday 17th September. You will be able to collect your wristbands here. Just bring along you confirmation email (on your phone will be fine)
If you have a free Bronze Wristband then it is no problem to upgrade. You can order a Silver or Gold Wristband online and it will be ready to collect from the arrivals desk. Alternatively you may be able to buy Silver or Gold Wristbands when you arrive if there are any left in the allocation.
If you purchased a Silver or Gold wristband and would like to exchange it for a different option, you can do so by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and a member of our team will be able to assist you.
There are only a limited number of Gold and Silver Wristbands available so we recommend you place your order early. However there are enough Bronze Packs for everyone, so you won't miss out.
No, you could just turn up at each event and buy on the door. However the wristbands will help to identify you as a Fresher and get you in quicker giving you a better Fresher’s experience.
Some events will be much busier than others, the first few nights are always especially busy. We would advise arriving early to avoid disappointment (10pm doors). It may be still worth you getting a Bronze wristband even after the first couple of parties (assuming you like going out late).
No! Neither SUBU nor BU run any parties at any venues in the town centre as we cannot guarantee any quality of service. Many of the other wristbands or packages are falsely claiming to be ‘Bournemouth University’ events so we would advise being very careful. Some of these events are also in venues which are far too small to safely accommodate all of our Freshers.
Any remaining orders for collection will be available from the Welcome Desk set up in SUBU (The Student Centre, Talbot Campus), this will be open 10am-5pm Monday to Friday.
If you're not a party animal then don't worry! We've organised lots of events and other activities, read the (green cover) Welcome & Events Guide for more details.
The real Freshers Welcome Crew are the 80+ yellow t-shirted volunteers organised by SUBU, they are mostly 2nd/3rd years who want you all to settle in and have a very memorable and fun Freshers’ week. They are all BU students and will give you honest advice and help you get organised so you know where everything is. BU also has some green t-shirted ‘Welcome Staff’ who can also help. If you meet crew on the street and they don’t have a yellow or green shirt then they are most likely trying to get you to come to parties happening in town.
Each Lansdowne hall or residence have differing rules but usually it is frowned-upon to be doing noisy pre-parties, we would suggest instead you bring your gathering to The Engine Room (Lansdowne’s Union-run café-bar). It’s friendly, free to get in and run by students with student prices, and it’s on your doorstep. If you have a DJ then bring them too. It will help staff if you can email email@example.com in advance but no worries if you can’t.
It will be happening in The Old Fire Station, Dylan’s or The Engine Room
An NUS Extra Card is the best way to enjoy student discounts with over 200 big name brands, including Spotify, Amazon and many more, plus lots of independent shops in town. If you order a wristband then you can ‘bolt-on’ an NUS extra card for only £10 (which saves you £2). If you DON’T choose to order a We Are Freshers wristband then NUS Extra Cards can still be ordered direct from www.nusextra.co.uk for £12
Within seven days of your purchase you will be emailed a NUS extra voucher code to claim your card online. Follow the simple steps on the email and importantly enter your voucher code on the webpage www.cards.nusextra.co.uk/affiliate/bournemouth/voucher. Your card can be posted to you or you can choose to collect it from our SUBU Reception when you arrive.
You can order tickets online via www.oldfirestation.co.uk. Most tickets will also be available from the Talbot Campus Shop, or alternatively you can purchase them from ticket reps in Halls for certain events.
You could email your SU president – Daniel Asaya firstname.lastname@example.org who is always hungry for your feedback, or message SUBU on Facebook or Twitter. If you would like to become a part-time officer at SUBU then the elections all happen in October so keep your eyes peeled on the websites.
