SUBU is very proud of the positive and trusting culture that it has and strongly believes that the way we do things is as important as what we do. Our Trustees are an integral part of this as they help us to move towards our goal that: ‘By 2016 SUBU will have a positive impact upon every BU student’s journey.’
Charity trustees are the people who have the general control and management of a charity’s administration, so when recruiting trustees, we have to give careful consideration to the balance of skills on the trustee board.
Trustees are responsible for the proper administration of the charity - They make sure that the charity’s assets and resources are used only for the purposes of the charity.
Trustees must accept ultimate responsibility for everything the charity does - The trustees are responsible for the vision, mission and management of the charity. They are accountable if things go wrong.
Trustees have to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to their charity - The law imposes a duty of care on the trustees of charities. This is sometimes expressed as a duty ‘to exercise such care and skill as is reasonable in the circumstances’.
Trustees must safeguard and protect the assets of the charity - A charity’s assets include its investments, cash, land, intellectual property, staff and reputation. We look at particular assets below.
Trustees have a duty to act collectively - Decisions and responsibilities are shared; so all trustees should take an active role.
Trustees must act in the best interests of their charity - The interests of the charity are paramount. Trustees should not allow their personal interests or views to override this: they must exercise independent judgment.
Trustees must avoid any conflict between their personal interests and those of the charity - the main implication of this is that, unless there is specific legal authority, charity trustees cannot receive any benefit from the charity.

4 External Trustees (currently there are 3);

I am a second year nursing student at Bournemouth based in Yeovil, which means I get to spend time in both locations, and have recently been appointed as a trustee. As mature student I have previously had a career in accounting, and I have a lot of experience of trusts and charities in both a professional and private capacity that will help with my new role. This is my first experience of university so even though I maybe more mature, I have a lot in common with everyone else and I’m hoping to help SUBU develop to be a positive organisation for everyone.
Robert Garza - Student Trustee
I am a double masters student that is currently studying MSc Events Marketing at Bournemouth University. Formerly a Senior Rep for SUBU, I have always tried to be involved with the University as much as time permits. As one of your newly elected Student Trustees, I am aware of the importance SUBU has at the University and want to be a part of the process that helps put the University and all it's students first. I am grateful for the opportunity as I see what an important role and commitment this position is and the the transferable skills it will have within my own career and CV.
Geneva Guerrieri - Student Trustee
I am a third year marketing communications student at Bournemouth University and I am a new Student Trustee. I decided to take on the role of Student Trustee after attending several student meetings, which inspired my interest in understanding how SUBU works and the strategic plans that will impact the student members. I believe the transferrable skills and experience I will gain from this position will be of value to me during my career journey. I look forward to working with the other members of the Trustee Board to help SUBU benefit its student members and the local community.

After an amazing first year at BU studying Event Management, I look forward to making a contribution to SUBU and the community which offers us so much. SUBU really understands the importance of our voice as students, which is what I will bring to the Board.
Graham Briscoe - External Trustee
I am a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Information Technology Professional, Certified Management Consultant and a Fellow of the British Institute of Facilities Management. I have worked in many management services roles throughout my thirty year career with Royal SunAlliance (RSA ) encompassing - project and change management, information technology, facilities management, quality and customer service management. Since 2003 following my retirement, I have built up a portfolio of “Community Investment” involvement, including Further Education College Governance, a visiting Fellowship and Lectureships in Higher Education, Housing Association Directorships, Charity Trustee appointments, Professional Institute Governance and " Change Management / Facilities Management " support to Charity, Voluntary and “Not for Profit” organisations in the South West.
Chris Buckley - External Trustee
I am a graduate of Bournemouth University and an ex-Sabbatical officer. I have worked in marketing for the last 18 years and am currently the Chief Digital Officer at London based creative agency Tullo Marshall Warren where I am a member of the Management Board. I am also a council member of the future trends council of the IAB and a Director of Things Unlimited.
