Had thoughts about leaving BU?

There may be a number of reasons why you have been thinking about leaving BU, so let’s talk about some of the common ones.

My course wasn’t what I expected

Your Programme Lead will be able to talk to you about what your course has to offer, including any optional modules that may be of interest to you.  If you really are not happy on your course and you find another course that is of interest to you then it may be possible to transfer.  You can also talk to the Career & Employability Service about possible pathways after finishing your degree which will help give you something to aim for.

I’m struggling with the workload and not sure how to cope

The style of teaching/learning in University can be quite different and the emphasis on independent learning can be a shock to some.  Talk to your Programme Support Officer or Programme Lead if you don’t understand the content of the work or are worried about your assignments.  Did you know that the library offers Study Skills workshops throughout the year and you can also arrange for one-to-one help.  You can find out more information on these workshops through Brightspace.

If you feel you need extra support such or reasonable adjustments for examinations then you can speak to the Additional Learning Support team.

I keep running out of money

Budgeting for University can be difficult.  You can pop into SUBU Advice so we can help you look at budgeting and maximising your income.  If you are struggling with money then you may wish to look into additional funding that might be available to you.  There are a number of workshops that SUBU Advice and BU are running over the academic year to increase your awareness and attitude toward money, as well as budgeting advice, how to avoid debt, and tips on how to enjoy yourself on a budget.  Keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page for more information.

If you are looking for a job then you can find vacancies listed on MyCareerHub. Don’t forget to take also peek at SUBU jobs!

I am feeling homesick or alone

Homesickness affects many students and it is nothing to be ashamed of.  Talk to your classmates or those you live with, I guarantee that you won’t be the only one feeling this way.  Explore your surroundings so they are more familiar, get involved in one of SUBU’s clubs or societies and meet some fab new people.  With support you can make University a really positive and fun experience.

If BU really isn’t for you then don’t worry, you can come to us for a confidential chat on what to do next.
