Holders Hamworthy United faced Portsmouth-based Moneyfields FC in the Wessex League Cup on Tuesday but were unable to continue their title defence despite taking the lead.

It wasn’t until the 65th minute when the first breakthrough of the game came as Hamworthy striker Max Wilcock found the back of the net with a header from a delightful cross from James Wearden, on his debut for the first team.

Just 15 minutes later, Moneyfields found the equaliser. A quick counter attack caught the Hammers by surprise as Josh Bailey slotted one home. And it was heartbreak for the cup holders as late on in injury time James Franklyn stroked home the second goal for the Portsmouth-based side to keep them in the competition going into the last eight.

After the game, Hamworthy Goalkeeping Coach, Ben Sullivan spoke to NERVE SPORT, and said; “This game gave us an opportunity to rest some players (the focus is on the FA Vase and the league), with 12 first team players being rested.

“After the first fifteen minutes we started to really get into the game and dominate, forcing two fantastic saves frim their goalkeeper Tom Price.

“It was clear in the second half that Moneyfields wanted to press us higher, and they did that, and we had to re-evaluate and go again. We were relatively comfortable until the end but respect to Moneyfields for the effort they put in.

“The one thing to take away from this while we played very well for 86 minutes but our younger players need to learn more on how to manage a game, and of course, in the end Moneyfields scored two goals which on reflection is underserved as we probably deserved a narrow win”.
