Welcome to Bournemouth university polo club student union page
Here you’ll be able to find loads of information about what polo is, information about our club, and how you can to get involved.
What is Polo?
Polo is a sport played on horseback, at a fast pace, involving three people on a team hitting a ball with mallets. The aim is to score as many goals as possible within any given match or chukka (polo talk for a match).
But I’ve never ridden before?
Don’t worry you can join us as a complete beginner. Our coaches at Dorset polo club will teach you every step of the way. You’ll be taught how to ride, how to play polo and the rules of the game in a friendly supportive atmosphere. Many of our members had never been on a horse before joining us. Or if you’ve already played that’s great too. we cater for both beginner and novices just let us know and we’ll see what you’ve got.
Could I still get into the top teams you have even though I’ve never ridden?
Absolutely, if you have a good attitude and engage you’ll see rewards such as being in our top teams depending on how quickly you progress.
What do I need to play?
At first, you’ll need to only bring along some sensible clothing. And our amazing coaches will provide helmets and things whilst you start to get used to it eventually you can start to buy your own kit don’t worry you don’t need all the expensive stuff. (Honest)
Do you do any events?
Well apart from our weekly lessons and weekly socials (catered around you as well!). We take part in SUPA both winter and summer nationals where last year we placed 2nd Combined team, 6th, and 7th. We join in with friendlies with other universities around the south-west and typically do international matches to end the year.
How much is it going to cost me?
Our lessons cost us £45 per session however even to make our teams you only need to commit twice a month and you’ll show the improvement you need to join our national team.
Membership to our club costs,
£30 as a full playing member, this covers your entitlement to play with us, your insurance and allows you to attend all our socials as well.
Or do you just want to be a social member?
£5 covers all your costs for this and this allows you to come and support us at competitions and come along to our weekly socials.
