The Arts by the Sea Festival was launched in 2011, funded by a Grants for the Arts Award. Arts by the Sea delivers an ambitious and contemporary festival of combined arts in Bournemouth. Incorporating high-impact outdoor spectaculars with theatre shows, music, comedy, light art, digital installations and mass participation activities, the festival’s mission is to deliver a programme of exceptional, high quality, challenging, unique and extraordinary artistic events. Arts by the Sea will deliver a multi-layered, week-long programme of events which bring together regional, national and international-profile artists. The Arts by the Sea Festival sits firmly in shoulder season taking place in October, and works with a wide network of major external Stakeholders, Partners and other National Portfolio Organisations including: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Pavilion Dance South West, Soundstorm, Activate, the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth Libraries, the Bournemouth Natural Science Society, the Town and Coastal BIDS, Bournemouth and Poole College, Bournemouth University, the Arts University Bournemouth and local schools. We also work with a range of internal Partners to develop and deliver certain projects and elements of the festival including Tourism, the Sustainability team, Transport, Parks, Night-time Economy and the Neighbourhood Support Officers and will be connecting up with a new Digital Consortium of Partner organisations including a host of digital conferences and festivals that already take place in September and October (Silicon Beach, BFX Festival, Digital Wave, Digital Horizons, Re:Develop).Core elements that run through the festival’s programming and delivery are the Creative Case for Diversity – focussing on equality and diversity in our artists and audience, ensuring that the festival is accessible to all – and Environmental Sustainability through our Environmental Policy and Action Plan – focussing on making the festival more sustainable, highlighting environmental issues and encouraging our venues, artists, suppliers and audience to become more sustainable too. In 2017 we’re piloting two projects to reduce plastic waste and encourage cycling. The festival is able to use programming choices to raise awareness of environmental issues and through our festival marketing can act as a vehicle to communicate our vision and Bournemouth Council’s existing green credentials.
