BU BioBlitz Volunteer

This opportunity takes place on 12 May 2025 Applications closed on 12 May.

As part of our pledge to be a Nature Positive University, we are running a BioBlitz on our campus Monday 12 May. The purpose of a BioBlitz is to record as many species as possible in a specific location over a set time period, using the iNaturalist app. We need your help! What is your role? As a BU BioBlitz volunteer, you will help us on our mission to document as many species as possible using the iNaturalist app. You will be expected to attend the BioBlitz Briefing at 10-11 on Monday 12 May in the Lawrence Lecture Theatre, Poole House, to learn about how to use iNaturalist and what to expect from the day. You will also be expected to spend at least one hour surveying the campus and recording species. This can be done independently, or by taking part in one of our scheduled surveys (see the full schedule below). This equates to 2 hours volunteering time in total. 10-11 – BioBlitz Briefing – Lawrence Lecture Theatre, Poole House 11.15-12 – Invertebrate trapping 11.15-12 – Bird walk 11.15-12 – Plant survey 12-1 – Lunch 1-2 – Plant survey 1-2 – Bugs on bushes 2.15-3 – BioBlitz Update – Lawrence Lecture Theatre, Poole House 3.15-3.45 – Moth traps Being a BU BioBlitz Volunteer is a great opportunity for you to learn about wildlife surveying techniques, species identification, and the importance of biodiversity from our academic and student experts. You will also be contributing to a living map of our campus biodiversity that will support the BU Sustainability Team with annual sustainability reporting. You can view our Bournemouth University iNaturalist Project page here - https://uk.inaturalist.org/projects/bournemouth-university-campus-biodiversity-network Please download the iNaturalist app in advance, however if you are unable to do so we can help you on the day - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.inaturalist.android&hl=en_GB
