Cherries secure Europe with draw against Manchester City

Manchester City were the final visitors of the season to Vitality Stadium as the Cherries continued their European push.

Andoni Iraola made just one change to his starting eleven for the game as Tyler Adams replaced the suspended Ryan Christie.

Pep Guardiola, in what was reportedly his penultimate game in charge of Manchester City, made one change also, Mateo Kovacic in for Omar Marmoush.

The Cherries were looking to secure European football for next season whereas City were trying to keep up with Arsenal for the Premier League title.

The atmosphere inside Vitality Stadium was electric and the opening exchanges matched that with both teams playing quickly and purposefully.

Jeremy Doku had the first real chance of the game just five minutes in, his fake shot got the best of Adam Smith however his shot was tame and straight at Dorde Petrovic.

It was none other than Antoine Semenyo, on his return to Bournemouth, who had the ball in the back of the net after 13 minutes, however had timed his run just too late and was offside.

Evanilson was gifted a great chance to put the Cherries ahead just minutes later. Marcus Tavernier found Evanilson on the six-yard line however the Brazilian somehow put his shot over the bar. The linesman’s flag was up to partly save the strikers blushes however.

Guardiola’s side built a lot of momentum after that chance, but Bournemouth stood strong with some resilient defending.

Junior Kroupi emphatically put the Cherries ahead just five minutes before the break. Adrien Truffert slid the French youngster through on goal and he fired his effort into the top right corner to send Vitality Stadium wild.

Kroupi’s goal also means he now holds the record for the most goals by a teenager in their debut Premier League season, overtaking Robbie Fowler and Robbie Keane.

The visitors almost equalised within a minute of the second half beginning however a strong stop from Petrovic down to his right denied Nico O’Reilly.

Bournemouth responded with a tidy move of their own just minutes later, but Donnarumma made a strong save himself to stop Evanilson’s effort.

With City needing a win to take the title race to the final day, Guardiola made a triple attacking change in just the 55th minute with Cherki, Savinho and Foden all coming on.

Even with these changes, Bournemouth still looked the better side and Rayan had a strong chance to double the Cherries’ advantage from a corner, however the Brazilian’s swinging effort clattered against the post.

City pushed hard to salvage a result and eventually got an equaliser when Haaland fired a remarkable finish past Petrovic to make the last few minutes uncomfortable viewing for the Cherries fans.

As Anthony Taylor blew the full-time whistle, Vitality Stadium erupted as the Cherries qualified for European football for the first time in their history.

Iraola will take charge of his last game as Cherries boss on Sunday as they travel to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season to try and push as high up the table as possible.
