An award winning author visited Bournemouth as part of his first book tour in almost ten years.

Darren Shan, author of the world-wide best-seller Cirque Du Freak, visited Waterstones in Castlepoint last Sunday.

The book tour was held for the 25th anniversary of the young adult book.

In conversation with Nerve Online, Darren spoke about his work and life.

“I’ve always loved telling stories and when a good idea comes to me, it digs into me. I won’t be able to let go until I've thought it through.”

“I'm very fortunate. My hobby is my job," Darren added.

"Cirque Du freak took a good few years to build up, it was a real word of mouth success.

“The nice things about being successful as an author is you don’t get the trappings of movie stars and footballers.

“My name is known around the world but not by face.”

Following the 2011 film adaptation of Cirque Du Freak starring Willem Dafoe, Darren gave an update on an upcoming TV show based on the book.

“I’ve been contemplating which direction to go next, but there is a lot of things happening.”

“There are two different teams in the USA and Canada trying to turn the book into a TV show.”

“There’s a team pitch at the moment, trying to get a nice few million to get it going again, so fingers crossed.”

Darren completed his book tour in Southampton the same day.
