Black History Month 2019
Black History Month is a worldwide, annual celebration that was founded to recognise the contribututions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to countries over generations.
Black History Month has been celebrated in the UK for the last 30 years and is extremely important because so often in the past, the contributions made by black people to the community were ignored or played down because black people weren't treated the same way as other people, because of the colour of their skin. It is thought that Black History Month takes place in October as it is the start of a new academic year and gives black students a sense of pride and identity. For the entirety of the month, events celebrating African and Caribbean cultures will take place up and down the country.
SUBU are extremely proud to present the 2019 event programme with events touching on mutliple areas such as micro-agression and racism in sport, being black in the LGBT community and much more. As always, SUBU urge you to get involved and celebrate with us throughout October.
