Star status means Clubs and Societies have gone above and beyond to create an accessible, collaborative and engaging community for their members. Members joining a 3/4/5* club or society can expect a high level of service with regular activities, giving them real experiences and opportunities to aid their personal and professional development.

How it works...

Complete activities!

Below, we have a list of activities your Society can get involved, each activity is worth 25 points. Each completed branch (themed group of activities) is worth 150 points total.

To become a 3* Society you need 100 Points, 4* is 200 Points, 5* is 300 Points.

Your Activities

The activities eligible for points under the SUBU Star Grading programme are grouped thematically, any Society who completes a specific branch are demonstrating a commitment and interest to that theme. This can be used to advertise to new members what you care about as a group.

Sustainability - 150pts

Utilise group transport over individual drivers e.g. hire a coach through DrivenConnect, get the bus to a social etc.

Use an Amazon-alternative when ordering items for your society in line with .

Organise a beach clean/litter pick or alternative activity that contributes to conservation of the local areas.

Purchase club merchandise in line with .

Engage in one BU/SUBU sustainability campaign e.g. Fairtrade Week, Green Week.

Choose 3 Sustainable Development Goals for the society to focus on for the year.

Community Impact - 150pts

Have the committee register on the Volunteering Hub.

Use the 'SumUp' machines for a society fundraiser.

Organise and deliver a volunteering event independently with support from SUBU.

Society votes on a charity to support for the academic year and organise 2 fundraisers.

Log volunteering hours on the Volunteering Hub - this can include hours you have spent volunteering for the society e.g. committee admin tasks, sending emails, running social events.

Fundraise £150 for your chosen charity and/or your society.

Community Impact

Trips and Events - 150pts

Host a collaboration with one or more society.

Host a sober social.

Host an event at Lansdowne (includes TOFS).

Utilise group transport options over individual drivers e.g. hire a coach through DrivenConnect.

Organise a community activity e.g. a litter pick at Slades Farm or volunteer at SUBU's Community Garden.

Host a society activity-relevant trip e.g. Baking Society goes to York Chocolate Stories.

Trips and Events

Liberation - 150pts

Fundraise for a charity that supports/empowers underrepresented communities or educates allies.

Committee to ensure that pronoun badges are made readily available to their members during regular activity for those who wish to wear them.

Mark a national History Month/Awareness Week on your society social media channels e.g. shouting about people related to your society who are from the community the month/week/day is marking, sharing ways people could be allies to that community.

Make your online content accessible - add alt text and caption your videos.

Add Access Statements to your event listings and advertising.

Run an event as part of SUBU's History Month/Awareness Week plans throughout the year: for example, organise an event related to a liberation network community, invite a guest speaker to talk on their lived experiences in the community.

Get a logo designed for the society.

Customise your webpage.

Organise your first event/social.

Set up a social media page for the society.

Reach 15 members - committee members must buy their memberships to the society too!

Have a stand at Refreshers Fair.
