Volunteering means giving your time to activities that benefit a community or wider society. Volunteers are unpaid and choose how and when they give their time.
Volunteer roles aren't the same as paid employment. Volunteers shouldn't be used as a replacement for paid staff and aren't covered by employment law in the same way as employees.
Volunteering can take place across a huge range of organisations and activities. This could include campaigning, fundraising, mentoring, befriending, supporting events, helping with sports clubs or taking on more formal roles such as trusteeships.
Volunteers should always be treated fairly and with respect. Organisations on our hub are vetted to make sure they're a genuine charity or not-for-profit organisation.
As a guide, organisations working with volunteers should:
- Avoid language that suggests employment, such as referring to an employment contract
- Have separate processes for recruiting and supporting staff and volunteers
- Explain what they'd like from volunteers rather than saying they 'must' or 'have to' do something
- Not sanction volunteers for failing to meet expectations
- Avoid perks that could be interpreted as payment
- Not ask volunteers to book or apply for holiday or time off
- Reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses rather than paying a fixed amount
