My name is Kyrian Onwuegbuchunam, I am running for the post of Vice President Welfare and Community. I am presently faculty Rep of Faculty of Science and Technology, student Ambassador and a Community Warden furthermore I volunteer for Citizens-advice, Unibuddy-Community, etc. functioning in these roles gave me the opportunity to learn, relate with students, students’-community coupled with my personal experience has made me understand some of the pressing welfare needs of BU students (both the home and internationals students). These experiences will come in handy when elected, I will leverage on the relationship I have with stakeholders in my present roles and the ones this position will bring, to provide an improved welfare service to students. When elected I will focus on:
Accommodation.
i)Engage BU to foster the guarantorship scheme, to ease the renting challenges faced by students.
ii)foster a synergy between BU and Private Letting Agencies.
Support
i)Work with stakeholders to optimise mental health support for BU students.
ii)Work with fellow FTOs, Community wardens, student ambassadors, PTOs, etc. to get feedback and improve student-community relationship.
iii)Host engagement and review session with students each semester, aimed at improving the welfare of students.
iv)Introduce Supporters club scheme to foster a home-like atmosphere for our Sports teams.
Welfare
i)Improve on existing welfare structures, expand the Community Kitchen to Lansdowne campus, and create more awareness of the welfare packages/support structures that are available.
ii)Strengthen relationship with community shops e.g Salons/Barbers, etc so that students can benefit fully.
iii)Engage stakeholders to educate and create more awareness on benefits available to home students and the right approach to access them.
My goal is to make BU the go-to University for home students and a home away from home for International students with regards to Welfare.
