Conservation Volunteer - at Talbot Campus

Talbot Village Trust is recruiting volunteers to help us maintain our historic woodland and Heathland throughout 2026 This will include a variety of practical tasks, and the opportunity to learn many employable skills relating to the Conservation industry. These sessions will also be a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors, and get involved with your local community!

Tasks volunteers can expect to be involved with

  • Bird/bat box making
  • Clearing middle storey vegetation to allow light to come to the woodland floor.
  • Path and fence maintenance
  • Restoring green spaces and creating new habitat
  • Ecological surveys such as Species ID and water quality testing
  • Foraging to prep for comunity events and much more

  • Networking opportunities as you meet other volunteers and students in the local community.
  • Learn more about species found in the woods and heathland.
  • Great opportunity to work in beautiful outdoor spaces walking distance from university.

Support

  • Refrehsments provided, including hot drinks and biscuits.
  • Full briefing and supervision before and during the session, including tool talks
  • Travel expenses if agreed in advance with your volunteer supervisor
  • Consistent support from volunteer coordinator Charlie

Volunteer specification

  • Relatively physically fit (please chat to Charlie if you have any concerns)
  • Committed to volunteering.
  • Experience of conservation work is not essential – full training and supervision is provided.
  • Enjoy working as a team.
  • Follows instructions accurately and safety.
  • Adheres to health and safety guidance.
  • Sturdy footwear and warm clothing appropriate to the weather and potential to get dirty.

Your time

Conservation sessions will usually be around 2 hours long including briefing and refreshments. Sessions will be taking place on Tuesdays and Fridays, based out of Slades Park Pavilion.

Contribute massively to maintaining Talbot Woods and Heathland, which are hugely popular in the community for dog walkers, runners, students, locals etc. This work will not go unnoticed in the community!

Training available

Full training and supervision will be provided. A tool talk and briefing will be given at the start of every session. No previous experience of using hand tools required, Charlie will be present to assist throughout the session.

Transport details

Our woodland and heathland is adjacent to the Talbot Campus, approximately a 5/10 minute walk in either direction. Details of where to meet will be shared every Monday.
