The Black Students' Creative Prize has been created by your current Black Students' Officer, Prince Nchiba, to give Black students at BU the opportunity to express themselves creatively and be recognised for their work. This year's theme is Share your Story because we want to make sure that your lived experiences are heard.

What can I create?

Entries should be autobiographical and about the entrants' personal experiences due to this year's theme but can be submitted in any of the following mediums:

 

  • personal essay
  • poetry
  • spoken word
  • art
  • photography
  • short film

What’s in it for me?

Top prize for the competition is £100 cash prize with runner up prizes to be revealed soon. All entrants will be invited to the Prize's Award Event and recieve a certificate in recognistion of their work. We are also hoping to display some of the work submitted in an on campus exhibition during Black History Month 2023.

How can I submit my entry?

Once you are ready to submit your piece:

  1. Make sure you have self-defined as a Black student on the SUBU website (we will check this)
  2. Send an email with the subject line ‘Black Students' Creative Prize Entry’ to blackstudents@bournemouth.ac.uk including your student number, a 75-word biography (written in the third person) and with your entry attached

When can I send in my entry?

The competition will open for entries on Monday 13th February and close on Friday 28th April at 17:00

What happens next?

Once you have sent in your entry in, you will recieve a confirmation email of your submission from the Black Students' Campaign. Once the submission deadline has closed on Friday 28th April, the judges will review the entries that have been submitted. The winner of the Black Students' Creative Prize will be announced at a special awards ceremony in late May, the details of which will be announced in the coming months.

Prize Terms and Conditions

Submissions should be sent according to the following terms and conditions.

  1. The Black Students' Creative Prize is administrated, promoted and run by the Students' Union at Bournemouth University. By entering this competition, you agree to accept the following terms and conditions. Failure to follow entry terms and conditions may result in disqualification from the competition.
  2. The competition will run from Monday 13th February until Friday 28th April 2023. Winners will be announced at a special awards event in late May 2023. Late entries will not be accepted.
  3. This competition is open to all current Black Bournemouth University students
  4. Only one entry per student is permitted
  5. All entries must be an original and unpublished work of which the entrant is the creator
  6. Entrants should retain their own copies of their work
  7. Entries must be submitted online via email to: blackstudents@bournemouth.ac.uk with the subject: ‘Black Students' Creative Prize Entry’; this will be acknowledged by email once submitted.
  8. The winner will be rewarded with a £!00 cash prize
  9. The judging panel's decision is final and not subject to appeal
  10. Entrants retain all rights to their entries but taking part in the competition implies accepting that the Students' Union at Bournemouth University retain unlimited, non-executive rights to reproduction without further compensation.
