International Buddy Scheme

The International Buddy Scheme is a non-academic, peer to peer support scheme coordinated by SUBU (Student’s Union at Bournemouth University) that aims to help new International Students settle into life at University and in Bournemouth.

Coming to University can be quite daunting, particularly when you have moved to an entirely new country! We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to strike up new friendships and settle in. Often it can help to speak to someone who has done it all before, that's why we've set up the International Buddy Scheme.

We match up new International Students with continuing students (Buddy Volunteers) who can share their hints and tips for settling in to life at University. The Scheme aims to help New International Students settle into life at University, decrease social anxiety and isolation, encourage a development of communication skills, and to create an opportunity for New International Students and Buddy Volunteers to develop and demonstrate intercultural competence and enrich their CVs.

The scheme will last for four (4) weeks and you will explore through a different theme each week. Across these 4 weeks Volunteer Buddies will share hints, tips and where to gain support around mental health and wellbeing, education and support, careers and employability and extracurricular and activities.

Timings of the Scheme

The scheme is currently running for the 23-24 academic year.
Applications for January 2024 are now OPEN.

What happens if I cannot answer my buddy’s question?

Please note that a Buddy is not qualified or responsible to give advice on mental wellbeing, healthcare, housing, or immigration related help. If you cannot signpost your student to information on the weekly themes kindly share the handbook with them for information about themes and essential SUBU or BU services.

Do I have to socialise with my buddy outside of the scheme?

You may choose to become involved in social activities with your buddy outside of your usual weekly meet up to discuss the themes of the scheme however the scheme does not require anyone to do so.

My Buddy isn’t speaking to me, what do I do?

If you have contacted your Buddy and not heard anything back, let us know and we'll see what we can do to help.

What if it’s not a perfect match?

If there has been an error in the matching process, or if it’s just not working out, please get in touch and we can try to re-match you.

What if I no longer want to be part of the Buddy Scheme?

It is completely fine to decide that you no longer want to continue with the Buddy Scheme. All we ask is that you do not ignore your Buddy. Simply email us to let us know that you want to be removed from the scheme. We will re-match your Buddy and may ask you for feedback too.
