Tottenham Hotspur fought off a brave AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium to take their second win of the season as James Maddison shone for Spurs.

The Cherries' started quickly, Joe Rothwell looking dangerous on the ball mixed with some sloppy passing led to the first corner after 45 seconds. Spurs responded quickly with James Maddison finding Son in the box but he was found at a funny angle.

Bournemouth kept pressing and nearly had a chance to take the lead but Cristian Romero used his physicality to prevent any danger for Vicario in the spurs goal.

Spurs had to calm down and take control of the match. The Cherries were playing the physical game, not afraid to leave a shoulder in. The best chance of the game came as Neto miss-hit a long pass straight to Son, finding Maddison 1 on 1 but the Cherries keeper redeemed himself with a great save from his outstretched leg.

On 17 mins Spurs made the breakthrough as Pape Matar Sarr found new signing James Maddison with all the space in the world to slot it home. After the goal Spurs started to play the football they are starting to build a reputation for, passing out the back and finding the gaps Bournemouth were leaving but the cherries had fighting spirit and they kept chipping away in hunt of a leveller.

However, this gave Spurs space to threaten and Son was found on the break he went too wide though and had to find Sarr forcing another save from Neto.

Soon after a wide free-kick conceded by Pedro Porro found the head of Philip Billing, but Vicario was there to collect it. Then Romero made a last-ditch tackle starting another counter, Spurs should have had two but a Ryan Christie clearance on the line denied Tottenham.

Soon after Christie could have equalised, but Vicario stretched to make the save. Bournemouth kept pushing before the break and they had some opportunities to score Philip Billing curled one in just before the whistle, but it scraped wide.

Bournemouth started the second half well winning an early free kick, but it was overhit falling to Destiny Ugodie.

The hosts kept full control and had their North London opponents on the ropes at times with chance after chance falling their way, it just wasn't going in.

Spurs needed a second to settle the nerves and open the Cherries. Richarlison was lucky to avoid a red when he stuck a leg out after slipping, Spurs were losing their heads and needed to settle their nerves.

Bournemouth kept getting closer as Semenyo hit the side netting from distance, a massive wake up call for Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou had finally seen enough bringing Richarlison off for Perisic and Sarr off for Højbjerg. The changes made an instant impact as in the 63rd minute Destiny Ugodie made a great run to allow Dejan Kulusevski to make it 2-0 to Spurs.

It was almost 3-0 on the 70-minute mark as Maddison was in on goal again, but his effort dragged wide.

Andoni Iraola had to roll the dice and as torrential rain started to fall with the Spaniard introducing David Brooks hoping the Welshman would add something different. There was a moment of worry for Spurs as Destiny Ugodie took a knock, but he walked off the pitch unaided, he was replaced by Ben Davies anyway to avoid any additional risk of injury.

Tottenham showed their class and managed the final minutes well to get their first win on the road this season. James Maddison, Destiny Ugodie and Yves Bissouma impressive for Spurs.

The changes on the hour mark are what won the game for Tottenham as the result means Postecoglou’s side temporarily goes top while Bournemouth continue to look for their first league win of the season, but there is some positive news as new addition, USA international Tyler Adams is rumoured to be making a return to fitness after the international break.
