Cherries come out on top against toothless Wolves

AFC Bournemouth grabbed their first win of the season at the Vitality Stadium after beating Wolves 1-0.

A Marcus Tavernier goal inside five minutes was enough to seal Andoni Iraola and his side the three points.

Iraola named an unchanged eleven to the one that started at Anfield a week prior.

On the bench included new additions, Ben Gannon-Doak and Amine Adli. Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert also returned to the Cherries squad.

The visitors had the first major chance. Marcos Senesi misjudged a ball over the top, allowing Marshall Munetsi to run through on goal. The Zimbabwean blasted his eventual effort over.

Two minutes later, the hosts opened the scoring. Tyler Adams won the ball back high up the pitch.

Antoine Semenyo fed Tavernier into the box, Tavernier then smashed an effort deflecting off Emmanuel Agbadou. The ball then ricocheted off the crossbar and in the back of Jose Sa’s net.

Moments later, the Cherries should have had a second. David Brooks delivered a brilliant cross to the far post which found Semenyo who smashed his close-range effort off the bar.

Wolves came close to an equaliser with their only shot on target in the game.

Jørgen Strand Larsen got up well to head his effort low into the bottom left corner. Ðorðe Petrovic got down well to palm the effort away.

In the second half, Toti Gomes was sent off for bringing down Evanilson just outside the box.

The Wolves captain was deemed to be the last man and the foul resulted in the ‘denial of a goal-scoring opportunity’.

The latter stages of the second half saw a debut for Adli, the Cherries’ latest addition, signing from Bayer Leverkusen.

Both Christie and Kluivert made small cameos after returning from their respective injuries.

The result hands the Cherries their first win against Wolves at home in the Premier League.

Iraola’s side have a quick turnaround before they host Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
