AFC Bournemouth moved to within three points of the Champions League places on Saturday afternoon, after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Everton at the Vitality Stadium.

David Brooks was the hero for the Cherries, the substitiute scoring a 77th minute volley, as Andoni Iraola's side finally broke through the valiant Toffees defence.

The result means that Bournemouth sit 7th in the Premier League, just three points behind Chelsea in 4th.

However, The Cherries now have a break from league action, as they face West Brom in the FA Cup next weekend.

Bournemouth started the match brightly, asserting dominance early on with a series of attacks.

The Cherries maintained good possession, playing with purpose, they created several opportunities, with the best chance coming in the closing stages of the half.

A corner kick taken in the 45th minute found defender Dean Huijsen, whose powerful header narrowly cleared the crossbar, leaving Bournemouth feeling hard done by as they went into the second period without breaking the deadlock.

Everton, in hopes to have more control, made three substitutions at halftime.

The adjustments aimed to strengthen their midfield and spark a revival in their attacking play, however the Merseyside club failed to record a shot on target all afternoon.

This follows the match against Nottingham Forest where it took 81 minutes for the Toffees to register a shot on target.

It means they have not scored in eight out of their last 10 Premier league matches, and the result sees Everton in 16th only two points above the relegation zone.

Speaking after the game, Dyche said: “I thought the first half was a close affair, but we weren’t where we wanted to be, so I made changes, I thought we were stronger the second half and we got into key areas.

"It was a tight game that went against us.”

Jordan Pickford also gained praise from his manager after denying Bournemouth seven times throughout the match.

The Cherries made substitutions in the 70th minute with one being especially crucial, David Brooks, who went on to score Bournemouth’s long-awaited goal in the 77th minute, with a clean volley that found the back of the net.

Iraola said: “Everyone could see the goal was coming.

"We hadn't scored but we had the patience.

"We had just to continue putting pressure on them.

"It was a matter of them running out of legs and not arriving to every shuffle, to every support defensively, and we could make the difference at the end.”

Another loss for Everton at the Vitality makes their record eight defeats in eight of their appearances on the south coast, while Bournemouth set a new club-record as they go unbeaten in eight games in the Premier League.
