Hamworthy United were unable to replicate Saturday's 4-0 home win over Amesbury and were held to a 1-1 draw at Bonnymead Park as the two sides faced each other twice in 3 days.

The draw means the Hammers slip two points behind Horndean at the top of the Wessex Premier Division-  albeit the Poole-based club still have two games in hand over their title rivals.

Conor Cocklin's 72nd minute equaliser ensured Tim Sills' side maintain their record of just one defeat in the league this so far this season.

It was a difficult first half for the Hammers as they saw an effort bounce back off the bar and  were frstrated by the Amesbury keeperthe Amesbur who was in god form making some good saves.

With only a few minutes left before the halftime interval, the home side took the lead from a free kick before Jack Lovell had what he thought was an equaliser ruled out for the away side.

It left the Hammers everything to do in the second half if they were to avaoid a second defeat of the campaign.

With time ticking by, the Hammers were able to salvage a point late on in the second half when in the 72nd minute Hamworthy defender Cocklin tapped home the equaliser as the poole-based side looked to stay within reach of Horndean who were winning away to Fareham on the night.

After the game, NERVE SPORT spoke to Hamworthy Goalkeeping coach Ben Sullivan, who said; “It was a disappointing result in context, considering where they are and where we are in the league.”

“Another frustrating night whereby chances came and passed us by, to be fair their goalie played well again and made some important saves.

“The free kick was a decent free kick it took a deflection off the wall and went in, and one nil down at half time was probably an unfair reflection on the game.

“Amesbury defended very well, really wanted something out of the game so credit to them.

“We must be better we must be more clinical and more ruthless but it’s still in our destiny.”

Hamworthy’s next game is at home to Hamble FC on the 5th February.
