Hamworthy United sent themselves to the top of the Wessex Football League as they ran rampant in a 8-1 victory against Hamble United at the County Ground.

It looked to be an exciting fixture at the County Ground with both Hamworthy and Hamble in good form coming into the game.

It didn’t take long for Hamworthy to open the scoring with Eddie Hodge putting away a cross into the box just two minutes into the game. The perfect way to settle into the fixture.

With 15 minutes gone Hamworthy went two nil up thanks to Max Willock who excellently finessed a shot into the top corner.

With Hamworthy two goals to the good, the question became could they stretch their lead further in the first half and that’s exactly what they. Another ball into the box was failed to be dealt with by the away side and Callum Lee was able to poke home the third. The Hamble players did not deflate themselves and continued to push for their first goal of the game. However, the Hamworthy defence proved resilient despite attacking quality from Hamble and left the home keeper with little to do in the first half.

The game looked to be sealed as Steve Devlin made great use of a free-kick on the edge of the box, putting it into the corner and giving Hamworthy a healthy 4-0 lead.

Hamworthy continued to dominate the flow of play, but both sides experiences good early chances in the second half.

As they had done so thus far, Hamworthy would show their clinical ability by adding a fifth in the 56th minute and a sixth three minutes later; courtesy of Matt Neale.

Substitute Bailey Rowe came on and showed the strength in depth Hamworthy possess as he put away the home side’s seventh in the 74th minute. Hamble showed throughout the afternoon they are not a team to give up, and eventually were able to achieve a consolation goal thanks to Ryan Wilkins in the 78th minute.

The final goal of the game was added thanks to Rowe as he finished an impressive substitute appearance with two goals.

The impressive victory means Hamworthy now sit top of the Wessex Football League following Horndean’s 2-1 loss to Blackfield and Langley.

Hamworthy are next in action in the FA VASE on the 12th February against Tunbridge Wells at the County Ground.
