AFC Bournemouth’s European ambitions took a hit as Rasmus Hojlund scored a dramatic late equaliser at the Vitality Stadium, to snatch a 1-1 draw for Manchester United.

Hojlund converted from close range in the 96th minute, flicking a left-footed effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga to ensure that the visitors would travel back up north with a point.

The Cherries were forced to play the last 20 minutes with ten men after Evanilson was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Noussair Mazraoui, referee Peter Bankes upgrading his on-field booking to a sending off after a trip to the VAR monitor.

Antoine Semenyo had opened the scoring at a sun-soaked Dean Court after 23 minutes, latching onto Evanilson’s inventive flick to fire home a low strike, after Bournemouth’s high press had caught out United’s defence.

Andoni Iraola’s side squandered multiple chances to double their lead in the second half, Semenyo curling a shot inches wide, before Dango Ouattara was denied by the woodwork.

Opportunities had been few and far between for Ruben Amorim’s side. Alejandro Garnacho had an effort superbly saved by Kepa in the latter stages of the first half, before Mason Mount saw his strike diverted wide by Marcos Senesi.

However, the Red Devils eventually found a way through the Bournemouth defence thanks to Hojlund, who reacted quickest in the box to ensure the Cherries didn’t complete the league double over United.

Bournemouth remain tenth in the Premier League after the draw, and Iraola's side travel to the Emirates next weekend to face second-placed Arsenal.

Story of the match

Iraola named an unchanged side from the Cherries’ draw away at Crystal Palace, as his side looked to keep their European ambitions alive.

Both Fulham and Brighton had scored dramatic late winners on Saturday, meaning that Bournemouth needed to secure all three points if they were to climb back into eighth.

Manchester United had the first chance of the contest ten minutes in, Kobbie Mainoo jinking past two challenges to make room for a shot, but the midfielder could only curl his effort straight into the gloves of Kepa.

However, it was the Cherries who struck the opening blow midway through the first period, Semenyo slamming a low left-footed shot past Andre Onana.

Adam Smith robbed Patrick Dorgu of the ball deep in United territory, as a trademark Bournemouth high press suffocated the visitors’ backline. The Cherries captain’s cross was knocked into Semenyo’s path by a beautiful Evanilson backheel, and the winger made no mistake with the finish.

Garnacho then squandered a golden chance to level the scores. The winger was picked out expertly by a Bruno Fernandes long ball, and found himself one on one with Kepa, but the Spaniard was on hand to tip the attempted lob around the post.

Early in the second half Semenyo almost doubled his personal tally for the afternoon, as well as Bournemouth’s lead, curling an effort just wide of Onana’s right-hand post.

The Cherries continued to threaten, and on the hour mark, Ouattara struck the woodwork with an audacious free kick from a tight angle. The Burkina Faso international curled his effort onto the post with Onana scrambling, and Illia Zabarnyi was unable to convert the rebound from close range.

With 20 minutes to go, Bournemouth were reduced to ten men, with Evanilson dismissed for a challenge on Mazraoui. The Brazilian seemed to slip slightly as he went in for the tackle, and referee Peter Bankes originally opted to show the striker a yellow card, but upgraded the decision to red after a VAR review.

Despite the man advantage, it took until the 89th minute for Manchester United to fashion a real goalscoring opportunity. Substitute Mount found space in the Bournemouth box, but his goal bound effort was blocked by the knee of Senesi.

The Dean Court faithful groaned as the fourth official indicated nine minutes of additional time, and Fernandes almost fired in a spectacular equaliser, but his long range effort whistled just past the post.

Then in the 96th minute Rasmus Hojlund dealt a cruel blow, turning home from close range to secure a point for the visitors. Luke Shaw's low cross was diverted goalwards by Manuel Ugarte, and the Danish striker was on hand to help it into the net.
