Premier League Referee Lee Mason has left his position within the professional match official governing body following a controversial offside decision last week.

Mason, who retired from being an on-pitch official last year, controversially allowed Ivan Toney's equaliser against Arsenal on 11th February.

The incident was one of a pair during that weekend, with fellow referee John Brooks also being criticised during the Brighton v Crystal Palace game.

In a statement, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said: “Both incidents, which were due to human error and related to the analysis of offside situations, are being thoroughly reviewed by PGMOL.

Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb has contacted both Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to acknowledge and explain the significant errors in the VAR process.”

Initially, Mason was stood down from match appointments for the following weekend, the 18th and 19th of February.

However, in a statement released last Friday, PGMOL confirmed Mason's departure by "mutual consent."

Debates over the application of VAR have existed since its first application in 2018, with fans left frustrated after marginal offside calls and potential inconsistencies between decisions.

The Premier League, at the time, said: “[VAR] will positively influence decision-making and lead to more correct, and fairer judgements."
