Derby County manager Rooney believes his team were denied “a clear penalty” after losing 2-0 to AFC Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium

The Rams suffered their fourth loss in five league games as goals from Dominic Solanke and Jamal Lowe secured all three points for Bournemouth, and leaves Rooney's side sitting firmly in the relegation zone.

In the post-match press conference, Rooney voiced his frustartions after his team were denied a first half penalty when Ravel Morrision appeared to be brought down under the challenge of Cheries left back Leif Davis.

While referee Andrew Madley didn’t point to spot, Wayne Rooney believed it was the wrong decision:

“It’s a clear penalty and I’m sure if you ask Scott Parker, he’ll say it’s a penalty. The whole stadium knows it’s a penalty, except from the four people who matter.

"I don’t want to keep making excuses, but there’s lots of moments like that.

"In their first goal (AFC Bournemouth), there were three different moments that were clear fouls on Lee Buchanan.

"The ref has a duty of care, and let the play carry on with his second head injury (Buchanan). I was really disappointed he didn’t stop the game.

"What I’ve said to the players, is that we can’t rely on the officials, we expect those decisions now, and there’s a chance for these lads to do something special for this club.

"We know we’re at the bottom end of the table, but we’ve got a chance. There’s no pressure for us, we need to play and perform.”

Rooney was, however, quick was quick to commend the performance of his side: “I’m really pleased with the performance. I think if you look at the squads and the different budget and value of the two squads, we shouldn’t be on the same pitch.

"To come here and compete, and make it a competitive game - I don’t believe we deserved to lose in the end.

"I’m happy with performance but disappointed with the result."

When asked about his team’s determination and spirit, Rooney stood firm with his players, and added: “Our spirit is there, that won’t go. The players reflect me, my character and that’ll be there till the end of the season.

"The club is in a very difficult position, you could put your chips in and give up, or you can get on with it.

"I’ve always been a fighter and I’ll keep fighting, my players will too till the last game of the season."
