Nearly two years on from their formation Weymouth’s women’s football team is proving to be successful.

The club narrowly missed out on promotion from the Dorset Women’s League last year and are currently in the hunt to reach the Regional South West Division.

The team was reformed in 2020 after initially disbanding in 2008 and Weymouth Player-manager, Tasha Sibley, said that “support for the club has been the best I’ve ever known it”.

Sibley, who has a plethora of experience at Weymouth and other local Dorset sides has helped drive the team to top spot with 24 points.

James Spring, who creates the club’s programmes as well as provide match reports for the team, said on the clubs founding: “Ryan Asman, from the board, was the main driving force behind it.”

Ryan Asman also works as a photographer around the non-league game in Dorset, including Weymouth women’s team.

A trial session had been organised in August 2020 and signs of the potential of the team were already relevant then.

James spoke about trial day, saying: “We had about 30 or 40 players turn up all around Weymouth and Dorset and it took us aback because we didn’t think we would have that much interest”.

The club would go on to win every game bar one in the 20-21 Dorset Women’s League, coming second to Holt United but are now in the driving seat to seal promotion this year with a crucial game against Merley Cogham ladies this weekend in top of the table six-pointer.

On the future goals of the goal, James, who used fourth tier Poole Town as an example, added: “There’s no reason given our infrastructure why we can’t be there too”.
