Wimborne FC: What’s gone wrong?

A season round up of Wimborne Town's Southern Premier campaign.

Wimborne have struggled so far in the Southern Premier South Division, sitting bottom of the league with 12 matches played. So, what has gone wrong so far and how as a club do they get themselves out of this rut….

Wimborne began the season with 4-1 home defeat to Taunton Town, which although an early season game, has reflected Wimborne’s poor form which has continued into October. It took until matchday five for Wimborne to get their first win, coming away at Salisbury, a result which manager James Stokoe would hope would have helped the team kick on for the season.

Some good results followed in the opening rounds of FA Cup qualifying rounds, with a convincing win at Wessex Premier League opponents Blackford & Langley. A couple of weeks later Wimborne won again in the second round of the competition coming out 4-3 winners at Basingstoke Town - who currently sit fourth in the Isthmian South Central at the time of writing.

Although their cup form was impressive, Wimborne struggled to replicate this form in the league. A point away at Walton Casuals was the best Wimborne could manage in their following four games coinciding with a cup exit at Hampton and Richmond Borough who sit ninth in the National League South.

In the last three games, Wimborne haven’t managed a single goal, which will be a real area of concern for Stokoe as he looks to get his team firing again. This an area that Wimborne have to improve on if they are to close in on Beaconsfield who sit above the relegation places - eight points from The Magpies - who will look to make worse for Wimborne in the next few games.

Wimborne now sit bottom of the league but have a chance to get a first win in eight games tonight against fellow relegation candidates Merthyr Town. This game is now looking like a must win for Wimborne as they look to really kick on and get their season up and running.
