What is Transgender Awareness Week?
Transgender Awareness Week is a time for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to the community by educating the public and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that transgender people face.
When is Transgender Awareness Week?
Transgender Awareness Week is the week before Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on 20th November. This year Trans Awareness Week is Monday 13th - Sunday 19th November
What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. it is now an annual observance on 20th November when people come together to remember transgender people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence. In Bournemouth, Inclusive Community Chruch leads on the organisation of a local vigil which is open to all and this year will be taking place in The Old Fire Station.
What is SUBU doing for Trans Awareness Week?
We have been working with your Trans, Non-Binary, Intersex and Gender Identity + Officer, Charlie, to organise and put on events to support and empower the TNBIGI+ community at BU and locally and to encourage other students to be allies. As well as this Charlie has collaborated with SUBU clubs & societies. Check out everytrhing that is coming up below.
Being an ally to the trans community is important now more than ever and there are a number of things you can so to take action from getting involved in the events we are running, donating to charities that help the trans community and expanding your knowledge of the community and the striuggles they face through the resources available on SUBU's Allyship Hub which you can find via the button below!
While Trans Awareness Week gives us the opportunity to shout about the amazing trans community at BU adn beyond, we know it is important to empower and champion our trans students all year round and to be an active ally to them too.
This is where the Trans, Non-Binary, Intersex and Gender Identity + Network comes in. Whether you are trans, non-binarym intersex or gender diverse in some way this Network is for you!
