Student Action

We have ensured that aspects of the 19/20 No Detriment policy were included in the new Protecting Student Outcomes policy. We successfully lobbied BU to provide uncapped reassessment attempts, an extension of the self-certification period, the removal of evidence for Exceptional Circumstances and a more accessible application system.

We have lobbied accommodation providers, BU and the government to support accommodation refunds. We have sent emails, letters and raised the issue at a senior level to ensure that the issue was prioritised. Many providers have now offered a refund, with students also able to access BU’s accommodation fund.

We have been in contact with our local MPs, asking them to raise the issue of student support at a parliamentary level. We also submitted evidence to a government inquiry to demonstrate the extent of the hardship our students are currently facing.

This year, we launched SUBU Summit, our main forum for discussing and debating student ideas. Through our new ideas platform, we have supported students in developing and implementing many Covid-related policies, mandating the wider work of our officers and staff. Policies passed this academic year include lobbying for tuition fee reductions, lobbying for accommodation rebates and increased wellbeing support. We have continued to provide students with the opportunity to give feedback through SimOn, our Covid Survey and through our wider rep system This feedback has been shared with senior BU staff to strengthen our lobbying work.

We have worked with multiple FTO teams across the country to strengthen our lobbying. SUBU President Naomie Lebe featured in the online campaign #InThisTogether , speaking directly to students and the government on hardship as a result of Covid.
