We work with a range of registered UK local and national charities to help find students the right kind of volunteering opportunities. From one off volunteering days to weekly commitments - there is something for everyone, no matter how busy you are!

The charities on our hub know that you are a busy student therefore most roles require between 2 to 4 hours of volunteering per week.  The charities are all lovely and friendly and understand that flexibility is required to fit around your academic time-table - so don't be afraid to ask the charity and agree times that suit you.

  • Supporting clients living with enduring mental health challenges through regular telephone conversations. Helping individuals identify and work towards personal goals, explore opportunities to connect with their local community and encouraging creative, positive approaches to overcoming obstacles and improving wellbeing. The role requires a compassionate and empathetic approach, strong listening skills and the ability to build supportive, trusting relationships.

    About the Remote Telephone Support Programme

    The Outreach Home Visiting Programme was set up to support people living with long term mental illness who may be suffering from loneliness and/or social isolation. The main aim of this service is to provide a connection with the outside world, for those living in their own homes and maybe disconnected from their community. Volunteers can encourage members to access services and support which may help them with their recovery.

     

    Duties include

    • Befriend and provide emotional and practical support to clients to help them maintain independence and relieve loneliness
    • Detect and monitor the clients’ wellbeing, in person, ensuring their health, safety, and welfare paying close attention to any changes in behaviour
    • Provide members with tactful guidance, encouraging independence, self-care, happiness, and social contact and integration where possible
    • Support members to achieve their ambitions as set out in their support plans
    • Encourage members to remain compliant with their medication and attend medical, legal or social appointments
    • Support members to maintain their existing skills and develop new ones
    • Encourage members to look after their own home, personal hygiene and health. (If it is felt that extra support is required, volunteers must inform the Outreach Programme Assistant/Manager so that this can be arranged)
    • Support and encourage members to participate in leisure activities and hobbies, e.g., a walk at the local park, knitting or attendance to a group
    • Always treat members with dignity and respect
    • Perform all duties in accordance with the organisation’s policies and procedures
    • Be aware of, and follow the procedures for, reporting any safeguarding concerns or incidents. Report any safeguarding concerns to the Outreach Programme Manager by completing the report form at https://hammersleyhomes.org/report-form/
    • Record notes accurately after each visit, and report any concerns, incidents, or safeguarding issues to the Outreach Programme Manager
    • Attend all training sessions deemed to be necessary for successful performance in this volunteering role

    Established in 2018, Hammersley Homes is a charity that provides support for life, for vulnerable adults who live with enduring mental health challenges and psychotic illnesses, and struggle with living independently.   Our aim is to establish a nationwide network of Day Centres, Outreach Services and Supported Housing schemes, to help with any daily tasks they may be struggling with, and relieve loneliness and isolation.   We focus upon increasing people’s quality of life and reaching their personal goals, whilst decreasing the likelihood of relapse into a mental health crisis that can lead to hospital stays or contact with the police.   Implementing ongoing support provides an opportunity to notice if there is any notable decline in the person’s health or wellbeing.    There is a growing scarcity of long-term support options for this vulnerable group.    Without the safety, security, and sense of community that long-term support provides, they are at risk of falling through the cracks and becoming hospitalised, homeless, or unfairly imprisoned.

    • Individuals with a strong mindset who can deliver support to the charity website and social platforms
    • Be adept in concept building, brainstorming, layout design, proofreading, and sufficient understanding of videography, photography lighting and editing software. 
    • Proficiency with all social media management and platforms - Facebook, X, Linked-in, Instagram and TikTok
    • Excellent communication skills - written & verbal
    • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines
    • Flexible with a positive attitude; ability and desire to work effectively with others as one team
    • Motivated with the ability to work without supervision
    • An interest in Mental Health and championing our charity

    What Would my Responsibilities be?

    • Creating high-quality content that is engaging, relevant and innovative for Hammersley Homes.
    • Work with PR & Marketing volunteers to research and support campaigns or events, showcasing content across our social media and website.
    • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practice in content writing
    • Create content to encourage users to our website, SEO support will be provided however a good understanding of keyword research and optimization is preferred
    • Brainstorm new content ideas and bring them to execution. 
    • Proofread and edit content to ensure accuracy, consistency and suitability considering the charity aims and objectives
    • Collaboration and closely working with others volunteers
    • Increase our online presence and collaborate with key stakeholders
    • Create and implement marketing strategies 
    • Adhere to all Hammersley Homes guidelines and policies.

    At Hammersley Homes, our mission is to provide permanent support for adults who live with enduring mental health challenges and struggle with daily life, to fill a gap in available services for this vulnerable group.We are looking for enthusiastic fundraising volunteers to help us!

    Details of the volunteering role:
    • In this role you will assist with organising and running fundraising events (crowdfunding campaigns/events)
    • You will have the opportunity to share fundraising ideas then put those ideas into action
    • As well as assisting with the running of events, we encourage you to share your passion for our charity and promote our work to the public at the event. Fund raising also means knowing and understanding our work and aims and passing that information on to others. Skills and experience required or could be developed in this role:

    • Enthusiasm, commitment and ability to work well as team
    • Good communication skills
    • Confidence in dealing with the public

    We use Hootsuite for scheduling posts, and we use Trello for uploading ideas about what to post, subjects that could be of interest to our followers and are relevant to our goals and projects.

     

    What are we looking for in a Marketing, PR & Social Media volunteer?

  • You will visit Hammersley Home members in their own home, to provide companionship, offer a listening ear and support them in improving, their overall wellbeing. This may involve accompanying them on shopping trips, helping them access local social groups and activities, and encouraging them to engage with their community, develop new interests, and explore creative and positive ways to enhance their quality of life. The role requires empathy, patience and the ability to build a supportive and trusting relationship.

    • Observe and monitor the clients’ wellbeing, in person, ensuring their health, safety, and welfare paying close attention to any changes in behaviour
    • Support clients with tactful guidance, encouraging independence, self-care, happiness, and social contact and integration where possible
    • Support clients to achieve their ambitions as set out in their support plans
    • Encourage clients to remain compliant with their medication and attend medical, legal or social appointments
    • Support clients to maintain their existing skills and develop new ones
    • Encourage clients to look after their own home, personal hygiene and health (volunteers do not support with domiciliary duties including personal care, administration of medication or cleaning.   • We would love to invite BU students who are looking for experience in public ecology to represent the University at Upton Country Park in our upcoming Wildlife Discovery Day Bioblitz on Wednesday 29th July 2026

    Every summer Upton Country Park runs a community biobltz day we call our Wildilfe Discovery Day. the aim of the day is to get our visitors engaging with our wildlife as well as providing an opportunity for other nature and wildlife organisations to promote the work that they do. 

    We would love to invite BU students who are looking for experience in public ecology to represent the University at this event. We’d like you to inform and engage the public in the conservation and ecology opportunities available at BU at a stand in our Walled Garden, alongside other organisations such as RSPB, Birds of Poole Harbour, Dorset Heaths Partnership and more.
    We are also looking for volunteers to help run wildlife surveying activities with the public, such as pond dipping, butterfly or bee transects, species ID, woodland bug hunts etc.

  • Talbot Village Trust is recruiting volunteers to help us maintain our historic woodland and Heathland throughout 2026 This will include a variety of practical tasks, and the opportunity to learn many employable skills relating to the Conservation industry. These sessions will also be a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors, and get involved with your local community!

    Tasks volunteers can expect to be involved with

    • Bird/bat box making
    • Clearing middle storey vegetation to allow light to come to the woodland floor.
    • Path and fence maintenance
    • Restoring green spaces and creating new habitat
    • Ecological surveys such as Species ID and water quality testing
    • Foraging to prep for comunity events and much more

    Opportunities for you

    • Gain and share experience in conservation work.
    • Networking opportunities as you meet other volunteers and students in the local community.
    • Learn more about species found in the woods and heathland.
    • Great opportunity to work in beautiful outdoor spaces walking distance from university.

    Support

    • Refrehsments provided, including hot drinks and biscuits.
    • Full briefing and supervision before and during the session, including tool talks
    • Travel expenses if agreed in advance with your volunteer supervisor

    Volunteer specification

    • Relatively physically fit (please chat to Charlie if you have any concerns)
    • Committed to volunteering.
    • Experience of conservation work is not essential – full training and supervision is provided.
    • Enjoy working as a team.
    • Follows instructions accurately and safety.
    • Adheres to health and safety guidance.
    • Sturdy footwear and warm clothing appropriate to the weather and potential to get dirty.

    Your time

    Conservation sessions will usually be around 2 hours long including briefing and refreshments. Sessions will be taking place on Tuesdays and Fridays, based out of Slades Park Pavilion.

    Donations Assistant (Warehouse Support)
    Play a key role behind the scenes by helping sort incoming donations, organising stock, steaming clothes, preparing donations for the shop floor, and welcoming donors as they drop off their items.

    Cash Desk Assistant
    Support our customers at the till, providing a friendly face and helpful service. Serving customers at the till, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere, handling purchases and answering questions, and supporting the team to keep the shop running smoothly

  • The Run Bournemouth event will take place over the weekend of the 10th and 11th October 2026, and will see thousands of participants taking part in events from Junior races up to the Half Marathon. You could join us to be part of our Event Team, and play a vital part in the success of the event. Whether you are joining us to gain experience, build up your CV or just to have a great day we really appreciate your support.

    Run Bournemouth is one of the largest mass participation events in the region, attracting thousands of runners and spectators. We are currently looking for enthusiastic students to join our Event Team Zone as volunteers and help make this event a success. Volunteering at Run Bournemouth offers students the chance to gain valuable experience, develop new skills, and be part of a large-scale community event.

  • As a Squirrel Leader you work with a team in delivering a safe, exciting, and engaging program for children aged 4-6 years. This role planning and delivering activities, encouraging participation, and fostering a positive atmosphere. Key responsibilities include the "Balanced Programme," ensuring participation in residential experiences, and promoting the transition to the next scouting section.The section meets on thursday from 5pm to 6pm

    The team

    The key to success with Squirrels is to have a team in place to share the load of running the section. Remember, many hands make light work.

    The team’s made up of Squirrels leader, Squirrels section assistants, Explorer Scout Young Leaders and parents/carers. Whether you assign someone to help you count the pennies, to share their knowledge on a particular topic, or to read the story at the start of the meeting, it’s all about working as a team to make it happen.

    You can help out directly with young people in a Squirrels leadership team or behind the scenes as part of the support team - rallying others, organising and fundraising. Everyone has a part they can play!

    Squirrels leadership team

    At the heart of Squirrels is the leadership team; organising a well-rounded programme for young people aged 4–5 to take part in, packed with plenty of skill-boosting activities and adventures.

    Young people are at the centre of our work, so ideally teams have at least two Young Leaders within the team.

    Keeping our young people safe is also important, so our volunteers must complete a Criminal Record Check where required.

    to deliver 

    • Welcome young people, families and carers
    • Take part in the hello and goodbye songs
    • Run games and activities such as reading stories
    • Support young people with additional needs
    • Celebrate achievements, such as handing out rewards and badges

    Safety and safe guarding : 

    • Designate a leader-in-charge for each activity and make sure everyone knows who this is
    • Complete and review activities’ risk assessments
    • Support the volunteers with a criminal record check
