Fairtrade

SUBU sells a number of fairtrade products in our commercial outlets and works with BU to gain the University Fairtrade accreditation.

 

Donating

438kg of food was donated to Bournemouth Foodbank by BU students as part of the SUBU Big Give campiagn in 2021-2022.

SUBU launched a community kitchen in September 2022 to support students with the cost of living crisis, giving access to food to those most in need. Additionally a number of cooking demonstration events have been held to help students cook once and eat twice.

 

 

SUBU Advice

SUBU advice helps over 2,700 students every year. They always promote health and wellbeing to students. SUBU also hosts events to pormote good metal health and wellbeing as part of University Mental Health Day and World Mental Health Day.

 

 

Reps

SUBU recruits faculty reps, who attend faculty level and university wide meetings to ensure quality education is at the top of the university’s agenda. They speak for students from their faculties by analysing SimOn data to provide evidence of students’ feelings towards certain topics.

SUBU has a wide range of academic societies that support this SDG.

 

Liberation Campaigns

SUBU have a Women's Network and a Trans and Non-Binary Network that are very active throughtout the year. We have a women's officer who sits on SUBU's executive committee.

Women in Business, Ladies 5-a-side Football and Women in Engineering Societies align with this SDG.

 

SUBU

The Student Centre has an Automatic Meter System that will alert the Estate's team if their is a leak in any of the water system.

Energy and Carbon

Carbon Emissions are down 45% across campus. The Student Centre where SUBU is based is a BREEAM rated "Excellent Building".

 

Jobs

SUBU employ over 190 student workers to help with the running of our commercial operation. In addition the Student Opportunities team recruit paid student staff to support with large campaigns, community wardens and also as volunteer leaders. All of which help to increase employability skills.

 

Buildings

SUBU reside in a BREEAM Excellent rated building. This has decreased our energy and water use.

 

Liberation Campaigns

We have SUBU liberation networks that include Asian, Arab & Ethnic Minority Network, Black Students Network, LGBTQ+ Network, Disabilities, Accessibility & Neuro-Diverse Network, Trans, Non-Binary Intersex and Gender Identity + Network and Women's Network. 

The Liberation Networks are a space for marginalised communities to gather, create communities and promote intersectionality. Throughout the year they will run campaigns to promote change at SUBU, BU and beyond. They are each led by a Liberation Officer, who is also a Part-Time Officer at the Union.

Polytunnel

In February 2018 SUBU installed a Polytunnel on campus which is used by students to grow food sustainably on campus.

SUBU promotes travel offers for public transport and cycling for students via a dedicated student offers page 

 

 

Procurement

SUBU follows a responsible and sustainable purecurement policy. Our commercial outlets follow our plastic policy and we charge a tax on customers who do not bring in a reusable coffee cup or who purchase bottled water.

Beach Champions

SUBU have student beach champions who organise and take part in regular beach cleans to protect marine life and our seas and beaches.
